Pfau Lake Dam No. 1

Cleveland, GA

Pfau Lake Dam No. 1 is a privately-owned earthen dam located near Cleveland and is estimated to have been constructed in the 1960s. The Georgia Safe Dams Program (GSDP) classified and regulates the structure as a high hazard (Category I) dam. A routine annual inspection by the GSDP found several deficiencies including wave action erosion, inadequate vegetation, slope irregularities, areas of seepage and principal spillway condition problems. As a result, the principal spillway pipe was inspected by remote camera and found to be in very poor condition with separated joints and excessive corrosion.

In 2008, F&H was contracted to inspect and evaluate the existing dam and prepare design documents to be permitted through the GSDP to correct the existing deficiencies. The submitted documents include a design report, technical specifications and construction drawings. The most economical solution to rehabilitate the dam includes installing a siphon as the principal spillway and constructing seepage drains along the toe of the dam.
